Overview
Lithium sulfide is a key raw material for all-solid-state batteries. The all-solid-state
battery is a next-generation battery that has increased safety and energy density by
replacing the liquid electrolyte of the existing lithium-ion battery with a solid, and
lithium sulfide (Li2S) is used as a raw material for the solid electrolyte.
Lithium sulfide (Li2S) is an alternative cathode material for Li-S batteries and is a starting
material for sulfide-based all-solid electrolytes. However, the enormous price hinders
the practical development of these technologies, reflecting various problems of existing
production processes, including high temperature/energy demand, greenhouse gas
emissions, low yield, low purity and use of air-sensitive equipment.
To overcome this, various synthesis technologies have recently been developed, including
the synthesis and application of atmospheric stable sulfide-based solid electrolytes with
improved resistance to moisture, especially argyrodite.
In this column, we will look at major domestic companies of Li2S for all-solid batteries.
