Overview

When a polycrystalline cathode material and a single crystal cathode material of a

lithium secondary battery are analyzed with an electron scanning microscope (SEM)

Two main differences can be found.

First of all, the particle size of the single crystal cathode material is about 2 to 3 μm,

which is about 5 times smaller than that of the polycrystalline cathode material.

The smaller the particle diameter, the larger the contact area between particles, causing

faster electrochemical reactions  It can store more energy. Also, in polycrystalline cathode

materials, cracks due to high pressure It can be seen that additional side reactions occur,

but cracks do not occur in the single crystal cathode material.

In this column, we will look at the distribution theory for particle sizes such as

polycrystalline and single crystalline.
