In 2024, total installment of separator materials used in
electric vehicles (EV, PHEV, HEV) registered worldwide was approximately 13,230
Mil ㎡, posting a 35%
YoY growth. In the global market excluding China, total installment of
separator increased by 16%, reaching 3,829Mil ㎡ and demonstrating a stable growth.
Separator is a key material which physically separates cathode
and anode inside lithium-ion battery but at the same time enables lithium ions
to move freely, playing an important role in determining the safety and
performance of battery. With increasing demand for high-performance batteries
in accordance with expansion of electric vehicle market, the separator market
indeed has been growing rapidly.
In 2024, major separator suppliers showed high growth in the global separator
market. While the Chinese companies are leading the overall market, the
Japanese and Korean companies are proactively implementing their strategies to
expand their market shares in the world. In the non-China market, Asahi Kasei
and Toray from Japan and SK IE Technology (SKIET) and WCP from Korea showed a
noticeable performance.
In the global market, including China, SEMCORP captured the 1st
place on the list, while Senior and Sinoma were also rapidly growing and
intensifying their presence in the market. On the other hand, in the non-China
market, Asahi Kasei recorded the highest market share, followed by SKIET,
Toray, and WCP.

This year, competitions in the global separator market have become fiercer as changes in production strategies of battery makers and diversification of supply chain have emerged as major issues in the market. OEMs in Europe and North America have been expanding local production in order to internalize their battery supply chains. In this regard, major separator makers are also ramping up local production facilities in earnest. The Korean and Japanese separator companies are intensifying their market presences by expanding production bases centered on Europe and North America. Some of the Chinese companies are also considering building a global production network. In particular, to respond to the US IRA and changes in regulations on battery supply chain in Europe, establishing a supply chain of non-China separator has emerged as a key strategic task in the industry.
With batteries for electric vehicles getting bigger and equipped with higher power output, demand for separators is expected to continuously increase. As the size of battery cells as well as energy density increase, the importance of separators with high durability and high quality is more emphasized. In this regard, it is projected that the market for premium separator products may further expand. In addition, as major battery makers are in cooperation with global OEMs as part of their strategies to supply batteries befitting different regions, it is expected that separator makers will accelerate modifications in their production strategies and technological innovation.
In 2024, the separator market overall recorded a high growth, and particularly in the non-China market, rapid expansion of market has drawn attention from related market players. In accordance with battery technology changes and OEMs’ strategic direction, the competition landscape in the separator market is projected to continuously reshape. The global separator manufacturers are expected to keep making strategic investments to increase their market shares and strengthen product competitiveness.
