From Jan to Dec 2023, if we look at the number of electric vehicles sold by OEM groups in the non-China market, Tesla remained at the top with a 37.8% YoY growth based on steady sales of Model 3 and Y. To be specific, Model 3 saw an increase in sales as the facelift model started delivery to customers. The VW group, to which Volkswagen, Audi, and Skoda belong, took the 2nd position, recording a 24.4% YoY growth. The VW group continued to be in an upward trend with favorable sales of ID series, Audi Q4 and Q8 E-Tron, and Skoda ENYAQ. The 3rd place was taken by Stellantis Group of which BEV and PHEV models, including FIAT 500e, Peugeot e-208, Jeep Wrangler 4xe, and Grand Cherokee 4xe, maintained their solid sales.

Hyundai Motor Group posted a 10.4% growth compared to the same period last year by selling approx. 560k units mainly focusing on IONIQ 5/6, KIA EV6, Niro and Kona. The Group, breaking the records of both sales and operating profit in 2023, announced that it aimed to increase the sales of eco-friendly vehicle through strengthening hybrid vehicles line-up and enhancing the global awareness of its EV brand, IONIQ. KIA also planned to tap into the eco-friendly market by aggressively launching new models such as EV3, 4, and 5.

By region, in the European market, the growth was mainly led by favorable sales of EV models by the VW and Stellantis groups. Tesla also expanded its market share in Europe with a 62.2% YoY growth in sales. MG (Morris’ Garage) under the umbrella of SAIC successfully settled down in the European market by selling approx. 133k units in Europe only. Telsa led the North American market by selling more than 710k units, while Hyundai Motors and Stellantis sold more electric vehicles than the American car makers like GM and Ford. In the Asia market, Hyundai Motor Group remained at the top position, followed by Nissan and Mitsubishi. BYD, who has secured the market share by positioning as a premium EV brand in the Chinese domestic market, outperformed Tesla in terms of BEV sales in Q4 2023. Particularly, in the non-China market, BYD sold more than 112k units from Jan to Dec 2023 (a 568.9% YoY growth), gradually expanding its presence in other regions than China. It seems that BYD has got close to its goal of selling 800k units, which are equivalent to 10% of the European market share, by 2030. However, tougher regulations on EV subsidy in Europe and trade barriers may act as a variable.
